I’ve been going through some Bulgarian music last night and the word/phrase I’ve heard most in the songs was “as before”, translated in english.
That made me think and turn back the tape through all music genres and found it in so many songs out there, either old or new, which made me think even more.
Actually, I got to a point that we always long for what was before. It’s always the best. The music, the times we had, the fashion, the food, the family times…we live in a constant nostalgia without realizing how much that affects our lives.
My mind is just working incredibly fast and I hear the voices of all my friends in my head saying this sentence at least once, some twice and even more “before, it was different, it was the best years, it was the time of our lives”.
It’s quite depressing actually looking at it this way. I, myself am the one always saying that “before” was the best on this and that. But kinda not very cool living this way when you start to think about it, is it?
What’s the formula to delete this pattern of our heads that thinks or actually remembers or considers the past moments better? And start thinking about the future, and believe in it. How is it possible to be convinced that what's happened before is better, when you don't know what's coming in the future?!
Or is it really true? Was it better? Do we get “less” from everything now? Is quality worse or we’re just used to what we once had best and can’t open our minds to get to like the new?
I don’t know...
Aaaand to celebrate tonight's philosophical mood I dedicate this great song from the past...perfect...or imperfect...
By the way I just noticed the guy is singing without a microphone and I'm sure in those years there wasn't a mini micro lol. Same with the guitar guy and everyone else...seems it wasn't that perfect, no?

I have been reading your blog various times lately, and I have to say that I appreciate it !
This one is a kind of debate I just like :)
Is the past always better than the present ?
For personal life, I would say that it depends of you life trend : are you happier right now than 10 years ago ? You can just feel it.
"Am I healthy, am I loved, am I happy at work, am I appreciated, have I a good home, have I goals and hobbies..."
If in all of this, you get an average higher than the past, here we go :)
It's really Cartesian I know :-P
For the music and the art in general, society define the preferred style, the network the spread, and technology the possibilities.
In all times there are fantastic stuffs and fantastic artists, their art is just different because the world is different.
But to conclude, yes you're right, there is always a tendency to idealize our souvenirs.
It's not bad you can still be looking forward to get new ones :)
PS : And for Imagination. Yes, tuuuune !
"Friki" clothes, playback, but one of the first songs I enjoyed at 15 in the parties !!
Well I must say I'm very happy to be reading your comment and I totally agree with your opinion.
Those are really some basic questions you've pointed in order to get the answer, and the answer for almost everyone is yes, "I'm happier now". It's in the nature of a human being to go into progress and get up every day and do what he does to make his life better.
But the thing I'm feeling is that as there are so many things going on today, such as music, arts, movies, etc and as the consumption rises, the "market" if I can call it that way has gone immense.
That makes it so chaotic at the time to choose something and there are so many artists, talents and works of art that one cannot reach to see or hear about, or we just miss, that it's just so sad on the other hand.
It was so much easier before. You had 5 good rock bands, 10 djs, 10 pop artists etc.
Not that I say that it's not cool that art has expanded, but it's different than the famous "before" I'm talking about when everything seemed to be kind of more "authentic". Now everyone wants to be an artist in one way or another, it has become the biggest trend! And there are facilities for that. So, for me sometimes it's just getting blurry to recognize the real art from the amateur, honestly.
Well after all as you said there's a lot more to look forward for, definitely. So..let's just stay tuned :)
Yes our music choices are more difficult now, the panel is bigger of good and bad music !
But I can not complain about that. Every one has its utility, even the worst one that is perfect to laugh between friends lol.
I've been listening rap, rock and funk being teenager, ska, punk and reggae afterwards, and electronic music now.
Each of them represent a way of coloring life with miscellaneous interesting perceptions and mentalities.
It's kind of traveling without moving !
Is the music less authentic now ?
For me, being authentic is doing something without expecting anything in return.
The artists generally lose their art when they start thinking about the money they could get from it.
For example, Street art is recognized to be one of the best in that domain because guys are painting walls just for the fun.
But, when they start doing it as a job, people say they lost their authenticity...
That's hard to admit, because cities or neighborhoods recovered by great grafitis are just fantastic transformed zones.
(search STREET ART UTOPIA on google, you will hallucinate)
Everyone would like to be an artist, and we all know why :)
There are now facilities for this, and the best example are the DJs. You can now mix without knowing beatmatching !
Off course it can be frightening when you reclaim technical authenticity.
From another hand, the no ending boring loops times necessary to achieve it are now over, and that's good news for the attendance. Music improves as it is more versatile and focused on the FX.
Finally the most important is the set choice and the capacity to adapt to the crowd.
The rest is just a technical extra.
By the way, even rock and roll bands are shit technically/musically in comparativeness to jazz big bosses or classical orchestras.
PS : And because you were in a funky-nostalgic mood, if you don't already know it, just listen to this :
Cymande - Dove --> let's go back to the 70's lol
